Yin Poses for Autumn

Autumn is the season of ‘Letting Go’ as the days get shorter, less light, leaves begin to change colour and fall, plants die and the vegetation becomes part of the earth to be reabsorbed. This is also symbolic of our own ability to Let Go, letting go of behaviors or habits that are no longer serving us or bringing us joy, preparing and hunkering down for the colder and darker seasons ahead.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine Five Element Theory, Autumn relates to the metal element which works to create balance of Chi (energy) through the organ pair the Lungs and Large Intestines, Organs that function through the lungs receiving the breath and the large Intestines/Colon absorbing nutrients then letting go of waste products our body no longer needs. This can also be related to our thoughts, emotions and stresses held within our body, which if held onto can go on to cause us both emotional and physical tension or habits/behavior patterns that don’t bring us joy or happiness in our lives.

Below are a selection of Yin Yoga poses that can help to ease this physical and emotional tension, to help us to Let Go! I have also included a couple of very grounding and restful postures Knees to Chest Pose and Legs Against the wall pose to compliment this sequence, as we can all benefit from some extra rest at this time of year too!

I would recommend finding a quiet spot to practice, thinking of some habits or behaviors that no longer serve you and you would like to let go of, as you hold each pose mentally chant the words Inhale Let, Exhale Go. Holding each pose for 3-5 minutes. Enjoy …..

Love and Holistic Bliss xx
